As a freelancer, your invoice is often the last touchpoint in a project — and the one that determines whether you get paid promptly. Here's how to get it right.

What to include as a freelancer

• Your name or freelance business name and contact details
• A clear description of the service delivered (e.g. "Website design – 5 pages")
• Your rate structure — hourly, per project, or per deliverable
• Payment terms (e.g. "Due within 7 days of invoice date")
• Your preferred payment method: bank transfer, UPI, or international options if you work with overseas clients

Billing hourly vs per-project

If you bill hourly, set the quantity field to hours worked and the rate field to your hourly rate. If you bill per project, use one line item with the agreed project fee.

GST for freelancers

If you're registered under GST, add your GSTIN and apply the applicable GST rate to your services. If not yet registered, you can still send professional invoices without GST fields.

Getting paid faster

Send your invoice promptly after completing work, set a specific due date rather than "ASAP", and follow up with a friendly WhatsApp message using the share option.
